Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving this year was a quiet affair for the Lodge. The Moberly folks stayed in town, and while we missed the STL clan, it was nice to ease through the day together. I've been joking that it was a relief that Johnathan learned to carve the turkey (thus taking Dad's job) or we wouldn't have eaten!
After dinner, the weather was so nice we went out for an impromptu turn about the neighborhood. The kids provided plenty of diversion and the fresh air helped open some space for dessert... well, more dessert.

Piano Recital
Over 140 music lovers and family members attended Mom's annual piano recital this weekend. This year she had 26 tickling the ivories and 4 on the sidelines for various reasons. This was probably the best recital I've seen in years. There was the first grader who played and sang (even stopping to invite the audience to a sing-along!) and a great little number from Randy's brass quintet who accompanied his piece.
Congrats to Mom on another successful year in the music business!

Funeral Finale
At the end of Dad's funeral service, the final song featured family, community and church members with Shannon Arthur as soloist. It was a wonderful wrap to a two-hour event that celebrated the character and faith of a great man of God.
The full service will be available via DVD soon.

Vernon McGarvey
Reverend Vernon McGarvey, 64, of Moberly, died Sunday, September 25, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. After a diagnosis of terminal colon cancer, he enjoyed two pain-free years with his family and friends, traveling to the Middle East and Europe. He was able to see his first two grandchildren born during this miraculous time.Vernon Donald McGarvey, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, was born October 15, 1946. He married Glynnda M. Taylor of Beaumont, TX in 1972 and was very proud of his two children, Scott and Jaime, both of Moberly and their spouses, Suzi and Johnathan. He dearly loved his grandchildren, Cooper and Heidi. Pastor McGarvey was preceded in death by his mother, Pearl Mueller McGarvey. He leaves behind his father, Don McGarvey, step-mother, Pat of Maryland Heights, three sisters, Helen and Len Licata of O’Fallon, Janet and Mike Derr of Hartford, CT, Margie and Mark McClintock of St. Charles, two brothers-in-law, Ted Taylor of New York City and Ray Taylor of Houston, Texas, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
The pastor of Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Moberly since 1988, he was an ordained minister of the United Pentecostal Church, International (UPCI).
In 1970, Pastor McGarvey graduated from Texas Bible College, Houston, Texas where he received a bachelor degree of Theology. He came to Moberly after serving as the manager of Christian bookstores in Houston, Texas and Hazelwood, Missouri. He has also served congregations in Granby and Coventry, Connecticut. A writer of religious studies, he served on the Curriculum Committee developing teaching materials for the UPCI.
He was the current president of the Randolph County Ministerial Alliance, as well as on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund board and was also the coordinator for the Blanket Project in Randolph County. Vernon had served as district chaplain for Christian Prisoner Fellowship in Missouri and as a board member of the Missouri Correctional Chaplains and Volunteers Association. He served as both secretary and director of the UPCI Missouri District Home Missions Department for 16 years. He ministered in hospitals, local retirement and assisted living facilities throughout the area.
Pastor McGarvey was happiest working in his yard, playing with Cooper & Heidi, ministering from the pulpit or at a kitchen table teaching a Bible study. He enjoyed reading about current events and far-away places. He spent countless hours mentoring young ministers and counseling those in need. He was loved by many and remembered most for his pearls of wisdom and encyclopedic knowledge of the Scripture. Even in his last moments, he was dispensing encouragement and guidance to those visiting him.

Dad returns to the Lodge
Throughout this entire process Dad has been fairly insistent that he go home. He did not want to stay in the hospital. After spending the evening chatting, we gave Dad some quiet time. This morning around 2AM, I noticed Dad's breathing had gotten longer. When we tried to talk to him, he didn't respond immediately. Over the next few hours his responses became farther apart. By 8AM there was no response to our questions and he seemed to be in a deep sleep. We made the decision to move him home and the great folks at Boone transported him late this morning. When the ambulance pulled into his street, Dad's oxygen level jumped. He knew he was home.
Now, he is tucked into bed and surrounded by the STL clan. His breathing is pretty shallow and his grip isn't as strong. We're waiting with him as he prepares for one final trip.
Message from Dad
As any good pastor, Dad wanted to send an update to his church family about his condition. The following clip will be played at APC in Moberly on Sunday evening.
The Saga Continues...
Around 3AM Friday morning, Dad woke up with severe abdominal pain. By 9AM, the family decided it was time to go to the ER. Boone Hospital staff did their best to make Dad comfortable throughout the day on Friday. Gayle, one of the nurses, said getting the pain under control was like chasing a train. Late in the evening, the amount of pain meds in his drip finally reached a level that he was able to sleep. When he called me early Saturday morning, it sounded like the dad I knew. But the report was from a world we'd hoped to have left behind us.
Throughout the day on Friday and Saturday, Dad went through a battery of tests, pokes and prods. These are the results:
Complete renal failure
A mass on the liver
Abdominal fluid buildup
Internal bleeding
The pain is probably caused by tumors getting wrapped around nerve fibers. His creatinine levels showed the kidneys shutting down and by Friday night, he was no longer producing urine. The doctors on Friday initially gave Dad a survival rate of 1-3 weeks. Based on our most recent lab results Saturday afternoon, we have revised that estimation to one week.
Tonight we have gone to a pain patch that will possibly replace the IV drip. If it controls the pain tonight, Dad will go home on Sunday and hospice will take over for the duration of his care.
We are praying for God's perfect Will throughout this situation. We trust Him to lead us.
We will update the blog continuously as information is available. Due to Dad's condition, we are limiting his visitors. Thank you for your understanding.
Throughout the day, some of the St. Louis clan stopped by along with Matthew & Becca Johnson and others. Tonight the four of us are camped out in Dad's room with a box of Shakespeare's trying to recreate the kitchen table atmosphere so many of you have experienced over the years at the Lodge. There are more pictures over here...

Cinderella on a Saturday
On Saturday, the family convoyed up to Macon to visit Maples Repertory student theater camp's last performance of "Cinderella: The Untold Story." It was the first "full" theater show Cooper's been able to sit through and Heidi, well, she's a seasoned pro by now. There was lots of singing and dancing and Heidi sang and danced her way about while Cooper sat thoroughly entranced (it probably helped that he missed a nap). The show was laugh-out-loud funny in parts and it was great to see Nathaniel Richards treading the boards as the leading man.Afterward, we stopped by Hawg Father's BBQ for bit of very nicely smoked brisket & pork. The beans are amazing and the sweet potato waffle fries are tasty. We'll be back!
A short note: This was Cooper's first time out with sunglasses. He's got two pairs (a Spidey set from Aunt Janet and black set from his Dad). He's been picking them up and slowly getting used to wearing them at home, but today was the first time he chose to wear them out of the house! There's more pix over here...Thursday, June 30, 2011
Relay For Life
In June, Dad walked in his third Relay For Life event in Moberly. We are profoundly grateful for God's blessings on our family. Fellow survivors Sally Walker and Sasha (Suzi's mom) have walked with Dad every year and it's a wonderful reunion for them to circle the track together. I'm always thoroughly impressed with the community involvement and level of production by the local organizers. They do a really great job.
Life is short, Opera is Long
Recently, Mom's brother, Ted, was part of a New York Times Magazine piece that featured students in a Metropolitan Opera contest. This is a nice glimpse into the competitive world of Opera and one of the many roles that Ted plays in this amazing industry.

June 17th, marked the 30-year anniversary of our Daddy and Gramps graduation to Heaven. He was the same age as Vernon and only two years older than I am. We knew he was young, but know it even more as we continue to grow older ourselves!
Today, I was reading “HealthSmart: Advice from The Doctors,” and I quote:
Today, I was reading “HealthSmart: Advice from The Doctors,” and I quote:
“Cuts and Scrapes. No need to dig out the hydrogen peroxide: All you need is clean water (to rinse the wound) and a little soap (to clean the skin around the cut); anything stronger can cause irritation. Skip the antibiotic ointment, too: Exposure to fresh air is the quickest way to allow wounds to dry and heal (any creams will keep it moist). If the scrape is in a spot that will easily get dirty (like your hand) or rubbed by clothing (like your knee), cover it with a bandage; otherwise, leave it be.” This was Daddy’s Rx all my life (much to our Mama’s dismay!), and thirty years after he is dead, they are discovering that this is the best treatment, as he knew all along. Of course, he would have added some prayer to it to speed the healing along!
I still miss him...

Heidi's Gone Mobile!
For quite awhile Heidi's been moving about on all fours... and then she switched to a kneeling shuffle. Last week she officially went "bipedal." She's walking! Hoorah!
Cooper's 1st
It's old news, but last month Cooper turned 1.
And I turned 37, much less of a milestone than his, I know.
It may seem odd, but I've never wanted to be the dad who views his child's life thru a lens and not in reality... "Sure, I was there! See? Here's 3 hours of video I shot to prove it!" So, I set up a camera and let it run, kinda in a reality TV sort of theme... and it worked out. Of course, we had to do some handheld stuff, but I have to resign myself to the idea that some things will only be captured in the giant screen of our memory... and that's good enough.
There's more pix over here and a lot more videos where this one is on the Coopercast.

European Adventure
Mom & Dad packed their bags, grabbed a close friend, Charles Alder, and made a mad dash across the Atlantic for two weeks in Europe. They started in Prague, moved to Vienna for a few days and then back to Prague for the remaining time. I'm sure Mom wants to tell this story herself, but the pictures are posted so you can start touring with them now!

The McGarvey's in Prague
They got in early on a foggy Wednesday morning and spent the day touring Suzi's family neighborhood and visiting her brothers. Wednesday night, they attended Bible study with Scott's church.
Thursday is a quick run around Old Town and Charles Bridge, then the afternoon in a tour of the Jewish Quarter, with a concert of Gershwin at the Spanish Synagogue in the evening.
Of course, scattered throughout is plenty of time with Cooper!

JAIME: Heidi's Seussical Soiree
The day after Heidi's birthday we threw a bit of a bash to celebrate her gracing us with her presence one year ago. Since one of the things we called Heidi during my pregnancy was "Little Who" because we didn't know who was inside there, we decided on a Seussical theme. Plus, anything Seuss-related is just plan fun. After lots of prep and planning, which are some of my favorite things to do, we invited 50 friends to feast and celebrate with us. Heidi was her charming self and greeted all of her guests, made the appropriate ooo's and ahhhh's when opening her gifts, and, much to Grammie's delight, did not cover herself in cake. She was ever the princess, using a fork and daintily dipping her fingers in her cake. Grammie put a halt to it all before it got messy and whisked her off to the bathroom for clean-up.
We are so thankful for all of the friends and family that helped set up and tear down. When the RSVP's hit 35, Johnathan convinced me we should move the festivities to the church fellowship hall instead of our home and I'm so glad we did. Heidi and all of her friends had a blast! And even if she doesn't remember it, we have plenty of photos to show her years from now of all of the people who have loved her dearly from the very beginning!Saturday, March 5, 2011
JAIME: Happy Birthday Heidi Lou Who!
Heidi is truly the biggest accomplishment in my 32 years on this globe. She is a beautiful, vibrant little soul and we are so blessed to be chosen to raise her. I told the Lord before she was born, "Now if you allow me to actually have a girl, she has to be a Die (Great Grammie's side of the family---characters every one). She has to be the fourth generation Diva. There can be none of this shy, quiet and reserved sweet child. Give me the sassy kind of girl!" And well, I have one more bit of proof to God answering prayers living in our home. Heidi Suzanne has more personality packed in her little finger than many adults!
So tomorrow we will officially celebrate her gracing us with her presence with a blow-out, McGarvey-style party. Fifty guests will gather to munch and lunch and read Dr. Seuss and shower Heidi Lou Who with presents. More photos to come.
